Meshanics and RAUC: choose by update boundary

RAUC is a credible choice when its core boundary matches the product. Meshanics is not presented as a universal replacement. The important question is whether you are solving device installation, fleet orchestration, application delivery, or traceable product-security operations.

Good fit

When to evaluate it

  • +Choose RAUC when you primarily need robust signed A/B system-image installation on embedded Linux.
  • +Evaluate Meshanics when you need fleet authorization, staged rollout, application and model artifacts, vulnerability handling and evidence above the device installer.
  • +Run a representative failure and recovery exercise before choosing either product.

Product boundary

What the current product does

A1

Compare the trust root

Ask what key a factory device initially trusts, how roots rotate, and what happens if the repository or transport is compromised.

A2

Compare recovery

Test a power loss, an unhealthy candidate, a missing health binary and a partially applied multi-component release. Marketing words do not define the recovery boundary.

A3

Compare evidence

Determine whether the system can connect approved release identity, device outcome, vulnerability exposure and incident decisions in an independently verifiable export.

A4

Compare operations

Include NAT, air-gap, heterogeneous hardware, enrollment, role changes, retention and the exact support model in the evaluation.

Questions

Is Meshanics a drop-in replacement for RAUC?

No. Migration depends on the installed update client, artifact format, trust ceremony and recovery design. A proof using a real product image is required.

Does Meshanics require changes to application code?

No. The static Linux agent installs on the device and activates signed payloads through typed adapters. Health behavior and recovery limits are configured for the artifact, not embedded in customer application code.

Does Meshanics certify CRA compliance?

No. Meshanics records and exports evidence for the manufacturer's compliance work. The manufacturer remains responsible for product scope, risk decisions, conformity assessment, reporting, and declarations.
